Lothar Matthäus believes that Niklas Süle was not appreciated enough during his time at Bayern Munich, prompting him to join Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund announced the surprise signing of Niklas Süle last week, with the German international set to join on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in the summer. A lot has been said and written about Süle’s surprise decision to swap Bavaria for Dortmund, with those in charge at Bayern aiming some criticism at the 26 year old.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthäus believes that a lack of appreciation at the club is what made Süle decide on a move to Borussia Dortmund. Matthäus also feels that Süle’s decision to join BVB had nothing to do with money, as he could have earned a lot more money by joining a club in the English Premier League.

"“I was surprised and sorry to see Niklas Süle leave Bayern,” Matthäus said on Monday. “In my opinion, this decision was never about the money. Otherwise, he would not have gone to Dortmund, but to England where he could have really earned a lot.”“Süle was not appreciated enough at FC Bayern. That’s probably why he told his advisor, ‘I don’t like it at Bayern. I don’t want to stay here.'”"

The likes of Newcastle United, Chelsea and FC Barcelona were all said to be interested in signing Süle before he agreed to join Borussia Dortmund.

Matthäus is confident that Süle will bolster the Borussia Dortmund defence starting from next season. But he feels that the defender is only one of many pieces of the puzzle that the BVB bosses need to solve if they want to be able to compete with Bayern Munich.

"“I’m curious to see if Bayern can find a player on a free transfer who is as good as or better than Süle … For Dortmund, he is a reinforcement, but only one of many pieces in the puzzle that BVB needs to solve to challenge Bayern.”"
