Borussia Dortmund have been knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by Rangers after failing to overcome their two goal deficit from the first leg.

Borussia Dortmund suffered UEFA Europa League heartbreak on Thursday evening as they could only manage a 2-2 draw (6-4 on aggregate) in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League knockout round playoffs tie away to Rangers.

The Black and Yellows had their chances, especially in the first half. And they were only one goal shy of taking the game to extra time going into the break. But they just couldn’t conjure up the fight needed to pull off the comeback in the second half, and Rangers managed to see out the win relatively comfortably in the end.

To make matters worse for Marco Rose’s side, Marco Reus and Thomas Meunier were both forced to come off after picking up injuries.

All in all, it was a very disappointing night in Scotland for Borussia Dortmund. And their best chance of winning silverware this season is now gone.

Borussia Dortmund actually came out of the blocks really quickly and Jude Bellingham was denied by the post just five minutes in. But it was Rangers who opened the scoring, with James Tavernier firing home from the penalty spot after Julian Brandt committed a completely unnecessary foul inside the box.

With Borussia Dortmund now needing three goals to even take the game to extra time, Jude Bellingham stepped up and made it 1-1 on the night. He then turned provider for Donyell Malen, who scored on the stroke of half time to pull Dortmund back to within one goal going into the break.

But Borussia Dortmund simply did not turn up after the break, and they were outplayed once again by a Rangers side that just wanted it more. A mistake from Mats Hummels allowed Tavernier to make it 2-2 on the night. And the home side thought they had another, but a foul on Emre Can in the build-up led to the goal being chalked off.

Borussia Dortmund kept plugging away until the end. But they simply couldn’t find a way past the well drilled Rangers defence.
