Borussia Dortmund internationals: Jude Bellingham comes out on top against Manuel Akanji
Five Borussia Dortmund players were in action for their national teams on Saturday evening as Jude Bellingham and England beat Manuel Akanji and Switzerland in a friendly.
Manuel Akanji was named in the Switzerland starting XI as they went up against England at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Jude Bellingham and Gregor Kobel both started on the bench as England came from behind to claim a 2-1 win.
Switzerland took the lead through Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Breel Embolo, before goals from Luke Shaw and Harry Kane secured the win for the Three Lions. Jude Bellingham came off the bench in the 80th minute for England and helped them see out the win.
Thorgan Hazard played 90 minutes for Belgium as they were held to a 2-2 draw by the Republic of Ireland. Former Borussia Dortmund striker Michy Batshuayi opened the scoring for Belgium, before Ireland equalised through Chiedozie Ogbene.
Hazard then set up Hans Vanaken for Belgium’s second goal with a well taken corner. But a late goal from Alan Browne helped Ireland claim a share of the spoils.
Marin Pongracic played 90 minutes as Croatia were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia. Croatia took the lead in the first half through Hoffenheim striker Andrej Kramaric. But a 91st minute equaliser from Jaka Bijol prevented the 2018 FIFA World Cup runners-up from getting the win.
Donyell Malen came off the bench in the second half as the Netherlands beat Denmark 4-2. Steven Bergwijn (x2), Nathan Ake and Memphis Depay were all on target for Louis van Gaal’s side. While Jannik Vestergaard and Christian Eriksen scored for Denmark.
Julian Brandt was an unused substitute as Germany claimed a 2-0 win over Israel to maintain their 100% record under Hansi Flick. Chelsea duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner were on the scoresheet for Germany. Borussia Dortmund transfer target Nico Schlotterbeck made his Germany debut.
