Borussia Dortmund II defender Antonios Papadopoulos will likely be seeking a new club come the summer, per Sport1.

German-Greek defender Antonios Papadopoulos looks set to seek pastures new come the summer. The 22 year old currently plays for Borussia Dortmund’s second team, and while he made his Bundesliga debut against Eintracht Frankfurt this season, he hasn’t been able to make a lasting impact on the first team.

Born in Stuttgart, Papadopoulos started his football journey at Stuttgarter Kickers youth. He spent most of his younger years with VfR Aalen before making the jump to Hallescher FC, who, like Dortmund’s second team, play in the 3. Liga. His move to Borussia Dortmund II came to fruition last summer and since then he has made 24 appearances for the second team this season.

With Borussia Dortmund’s defensive situation beyond this season unclear, it remains to be seen if any of the club’s players will be promoted from the youth system or second team. If the rumors surrounding Manuel Akanji’s exit and the acquisition of Nico Schlotterbeck come to fruition however, it seems unlikely that a player like Papadopoulos will find many minutes in the starting 11 of the first team.

For a player who is 22 years old, it’s imperative that they seek out as many minutes as possible on the pitch. With this in mind, if Papadopoulos wants to play at the highest level possible, a move away seems like the most logical step to take in the foreseeable future. It is unlikely that he will be given much of an opportunity in the first-team at BVB, considering he was primarily signed to help out the second team in the 3. Liga.

According to the information Sport1 has reported, Papadopoulos has garnered interest from Fortuna Düsseldorf, which would likely be a good move for the player as the level of play in the 2. Bundesliga would test him far more than playing for Borussia Dortmund II has to at this point. We could perhaps see a similar story to that of Amos Pieper’s, whose current career trajectory brought him back to the Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld.
