Bundesliga Roundup: Köln win the Rhine derby; SC Freiburg close the gap to fourth place

FC Köln boosted their hopes of qualifying for European football with a 3-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, while SC Freiburg closed the gap to fourth placed Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 30 of the Bundesliga season.

FC Köln got the bragging rights in the Rhine derby once again as they cruised to a 3-1 win away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. It was an excellent performance from the Billy Goats, who raced to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Anthony Modeste, Florian Kainz and Dejan Ljubicic.

Breel Embolo did pull a goal back late on for Gladbach, but it wasn’t enough as Köln kept their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League alive.

SC Freiburg moved to within one point of fourth placed Bayer Leverkusen thanks to a 3-0 win over VfL Bochum. Lukas Kübler opened the scoring for Christian Streich’s side, before Roland Sallai made sure of the win with his brace.

Union Berlin breezed to a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt and moved up to sixth place in the Bundesliga standings. First half goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Grischa Prömel gave the Berliners a vital win in their quest to qualify for next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

17 year old Tom Rothe became the youngest player to score on his Bundesliga debut, as Borussia Dortmund ran rampant against a hapless Wolfsburg side. Five goals in a 14 minute period helped the Black and Yellows claim a 6-1 win.

Erling Haaland, Axel Witsel, Manuel Akanji and Emre Can were also on the scoresheet for Marco Rose’s side, while Ridle Baku scored a late consolation goal for Wolfsburg.

RB Leipzig continued their excellent run of form and moved up to third place with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Dominik Szoboszlai scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute.

Bayern Munich moved to within one win of clinching the Bundesliga title, as they claimed a 3-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld. Jacob Barrett Laursen’s own goal helped Bayern take the lead, before Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala scored to ensure the three points for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.

Hertha Berlin moved out of the relegation zone after claiming a 1-0 win over FC Augsburg. Suat Serdar’s goal in the 49th minute sealed a vital win for the capital club in their hopes of avoiding relegation.
