Borussia Dortmund Frauen crown historic inaugural season with promotion

Borussia Dortmund Frauen have had a successful first season, with their performances paving the way for promotion to the Bezirksliga.

It has been a historic campaign for Borussia Dortmund Frauen this season. This was the BVB Frauen team’s inaugural season and they made it over the line with an overall display of dominance, capping off the season with a 4-0 win over TV Brechten II to earn promotion.

BVB Frauen finished the season with an immense goal difference in the league of 143 goals for to 3 against, which shows just how far above their competition they actually were. The team’s overall total for goals scored was 171 in all competitions including the Kreispokal and promotion playoffs, with only an equally as astonishing 4 goals against, resulting in a goal difference of +167.

The goal however, is of course for Borussia Dortmund Frauen to eventually play in the Bundesliga. Winning the Kreisliga, which is the 7th tier, is BVB Frauen’s first milestone. They will have to get through a few more tiers before they are promoted to Germany’s top flight in women’s football, a sizable task to say the least. Department manager Svenja Schlenker was very clear in this respect when speaking about the current state of affairs at the club:

"“It would be great if things continued like this because, as everyone knows, we have charted our own path: we would like to play in the Bundesliga.”"

While the task remains large, the team seems well equipped to make it through each tier of women’s football in Germany strongly. The squad is packed with exciting attacking talents such as Hannah Goosmann, Ana Zabell, Ann-Kathrin Lau and Vanessa Heim, all of whom had overall goal involvements that exceeded 20 goals and assists in under 20 matches.

Their goals + assists per 90 numbers were well above 2, which heavily contributed to the team’s success up front. The team’s defense was also unrivaled, with players like Allegra Gerres, Marina Jung and goalkeeper Sandra Schröer being crucial to making sure that any lead BVB Frauen secured was unassailable.

The Borussia Dortmund Frauen team has all the pieces it needs to go forward confidently and proudly into the next tier. It will be exciting to watch the team’s progress as it climbs through the divisions, and we will be behind them all the way.
