Lucien Favre has decided against joining Borussia Mönchengladbach despite being heavily linked with the head coach job in recent weeks.

Lucien Favre will not be Borussia Mönchengladbach’s next head coach, sporting director Roland Virkus has confirmed. The former Borussia Dortmund trainer was heavily linked with a move to Gladbach, but it appears that he does not want to coach in the Bundesliga anymore.

Favre was the clear favourite to succeed Adi Hütter, who was sacked by Borussia Mönchengladbach after a disappointing season that saw them finish tenth in the Bundesliga standings. But Virkus has now revealed that despite their best efforts, Favre has turned down the opportunity to become Gladbach’s next head coach.

"During Gladbach’s annual members’ meeting on Monday, Virkus said: “Borussia has a place in Lucien Favre’s heart, but he doesn’t want to work in Germany anymore. You can be sure that we have done everything over the past two weeks. But I don’t think that Lucien will be the next head coach of Borussia.”"

Lucien Favre has not taken on a new job since parting ways with Borussia Dortmund in December 2020. He was wanted by English Premier League side Crystal Palace last year, but turned down that job as he wanted to spend some more time away from the game. And now he will not be making a stunning return to Gladbach either.

Favre previously spent four years at Gladbach between 2011 and 2015. The Swiss tactician’s arrival sparked an impressive turnaround, and he guided the Foals to two top four finishes in four years at the club.

It remains to be seen who Borussia Mönchengladbach will now look to appoint as their next head coach. Vincent Kompany, Daniel Farke, and Hannes Wolf are some of the names who have been linked with the Gladbach coaching job in recent weeks.
