FC Augsburg have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to appoint Enrico Maaßen as their new head coach. The deal will be finalised in the coming days, and Maaßen will get his maiden opportunity to coach in the Bundesliga.
Enrico Maaßen is considered to be one of the most exciting young coaches in Germany. He was appointed Borussia Dortmund II head coach in 2020 and led the team to the Regionalliga West title in his first season in charge. The 38 year old also helped guide the BVB U-23s to a ninth place finish in the 3. Liga standings in the recently concluded season despite being forced to deal with a string of injury problems.
FC Augsburg were looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Markus Weinzierl. Maaßen was their number one candidate right from the start. And after weeks of speculation, an agreement has finally been reached between the two clubs.
According to WAZ, Borussia Dortmund will receive a fee of 500,000 euros plus bonuses for Maaßen. They will now need a new head coach for the U-23s team. The 2022/23 3. Liga season will get underway on 22 July.
Maaßen becomes the latest Borussia Dortmund II head coach to get a coaching job in one of Europe’s top five leagues. He will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of David Wagner and Daniel Farke, who have made a big impact in recent years.
