Lothar Matthäus: Winning the Bundesliga title has to be the goal for Borussia Dortmund
By Tushar Bahl
Lothar Matthäus believes that winning the Bundesliga title has to be Borussia Dortmund’s goal for next season on the back of their impressive transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund have moved quickly to revamp their squad in the transfer market following their underwhelming season. The Black and Yellows have already completed seven summer signings, with the likes of Karim Adeyemi, Niklas Süle, Nico Schlotterbeck and Salih Özcan arriving to bolster the squad.
Borussia Dortmund are also in talks to sign Sebastien Haller from Ajax, with the former Eintracht Frankfurt striker their first choice to replace the Manchester City-bound Erling Haaland.
Former Germany and Bayern Munich player Lothar Matthäus has been left impressed by Dortmund’s spending spree. But he believes that there can now only be one goal for BVB next season. In his column for Sky Sport, Matthäus wrote:
"“Borussia Dortmund have also been extremely diligent in terms of bringing in reinforcements. In Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, two German internationals for the central defence. In Adeyemi, a fantastic youngster for the offence, and now Sebastian Haller is also expected to come in as the replacement for Haaland.”“All this has to be enough for a real challenge for the title without any ifs and buts. There can be no other goal for BVB than the Bundesliga title. They have to want it and aim for it with all their might.”"
In addition to their new signings, Borussia Dortmund have also appointed Edin Terzic as their head coach. BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke recently said that they must give Terzic time to get the team back on track following their squad overhaul.
Defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are also making a number of changes to their squad. The Bavarians have already brought in Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch, and they are set to complete the signing of Sadio Mane this week. Robert Lewandowski, on the other hand, wants to leave the club. Although it remains to be seen whether he will get his wish or not.
The 2022/23 Bundesliga season promises to be a fascinating one, and it will certainly be interesting to see if Borussia Dortmund can finally topple Bayern Munich.
