Report: Inter Milan stepping up interest in Manuel Akanji
Inter Milan are said to be intensifying their efforts to sign Manuel Akanji, with BILD claiming that they are willing to pay up to 30 million euros.
Manuel Akanji has been one of the many Borussia Dortmund players earmarked for a move this summer in lieu of the ongoing rebuild. The Swiss international has been with the club since January of 2018, initially struggling to put in consistent performances.
Over the course of the last year and a half however, Akanji has indeed become one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent defenders. As he enters the last year of his contract, the centre-back has made it clear that he has no intention of staying in Dortmund beyond 2023 and will seek pastures new. This puts the impetus on the club to sell before the start of the new season. Interest in the player has been relatively quiet, with no official offers coming in for Dortmund to consider.
According to BILD, however this may soon change with Akanji attracting interest from Italian side Inter Milan. Akanji is high on the shortlist of players who could replace the outgoing Milan Škriniar, who has heavily been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks.
Akanji, at face value, is an experienced centre-back entering his prime. With his contract running out in one year, the financial package would also be quite affordable for most clubs playing in the UEFA Champions League.
It remains to be seen if Akanji will indeed leave the club this summer, but it would certainly be in the interest of all parties involved if he does secure a move away. BILD add that Borussia Dortmund expect the defender to leave the club this summer. And despite links to the English Premier League, a move to Italy appears to be the likeliest option at the moment.
