Borussia Dortmund suffered their first defeat of pre-season, as two goals from Gonçalo Guedes helped Valencia CF claim a 3-1 win.
Karim Adeyemi, Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle all made their Borussia Dortmund debuts on Monday. But they weren’t able to prevent the Black and Yellows from suffering a 3-1 defeat against La Liga side Valencia CF in Altach, Austria.
The game got off to a lively start with both teams coming close to scoring early on. Edin Terzic’s side were denied by the goalkeeper and the woodwork in the first half, before Gonçalo Guedes gave Valencia the lead in the 40th minute with a deflected effort.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens came on at half time and won Borussia Dortmund a penalty in the 50th minute. Marco Reus stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 1-1. But quick-fire goals from Marcos André and Guedes helped Valencia claim a 3-1 win.
Despite the defeat, it was a strong workout for the Borussia Dortmund players. A lot of the players who were on international duty last month got their first minutes of pre-season.
Sebastien Haller missed the game due to illness, while Salih Özcan is still recovering from the minor injury he suffered last week. Manuel Akanji and Nico Schulz were also left out of the squad, with the defensive duo free to leave the club.
Borussia Dortmund will now return to their training camp in Switzerland to continue their preparations for the new season. The BVB players will be in action in Austria again on Friday as they go up against Villarreal in their final pre-season friendly before the first competitive game of the new season (against 1860 Munich in the DFB-Pokal).
