Niklas Süle looks set to miss Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday after suffering a thigh injury.

Borussia Dortmund appear to have suffered a big blow going into the opening day of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, with Niklas Süle sidelined due to a thigh injury. According to Kicker, the central defender will be sidelined for the next two to three weeks.

Süle will miss BVB’s Bundesliga opener against Bayer Leverkusen this weekend, as well as next week’s trip to Freiburg, and possibly the home game against Werder Bremen on matchday three.

Süle suffered his injury during Borussia Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal first round clash against 1860 Munich on Friday evening. The 26 year old started alongside fellow new signing Nico Schlotterbeck in the heart of the BVB defence against 1860 Munich but had to be subbed off at half-time.

Head coach Edin Terzic revealed after the game that Süle felt something on his thigh, and so they decided not to take any risks with his fitness.

Mats Hummels came on to replace Niklas Süle at half-time on Friday, and would be the obvious choice to come into the starting XI for the Bundesliga matchday one clash against Bayer Leverkusen. The 33 year old was left out of Borussia Dortmund’s starting lineup for Friday’s game but made a strong impression after coming on.

Soumaila Coulibaly and Manuel Akanji are the other centre-backs in the Borussia Dortmund first-team squad. But the latter wants to leave and it is unlikely that he will play again for the club, unless a buyer cannot be found before the end of the transfer window.
