Mateu Morey made his first competitive appearance in 468 days on Saturday, as he helped the Borussia Dortmund U-23s beat Rot-Weiss Essen in the 3. Liga.

After spending more than one year on the sidelines, Mateu Morey finally made his return to competitive action on Saturday. The talented right-back played 45 minutes for the Borussia Dortmund U-23s in the 3. Liga, as they claimed a 1-0 win over Rot-Weiss Essen at the Signal Iduna Park.

Morey suffered a serious knee injury during Borussia Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal tie against Holstein Kiel in May 2021. After two surgeries and months of rehab, he is now working his way back towards making his first-team comeback.

The 22 year old trained with the first-team during pre-season and also featured in Borussia Dortmund’s friendly match against Antalyaspor last month. And with his appearance against Rot-Weiss Essen on Saturday, he took the next big step in his bid to get back to full fitness.

Edin Terzic said earlier this week that they want to take a cautious approach with Morey’s fitness in order to prevent the risk of further injuries. He also hinted that the Spaniard could get some playing time for the first-team in the coming weeks.
