Edin Terzic: Borussia Dortmund deserved to lose against Werder Bremen
Edin Terzic was annoyed with the way Borussia Dortmund folded against Werder Bremen, but admitted that the defeat was a deserved one.
Borussia Dortmund were handed a reality check on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Werder Bremen. The Black and Yellows imploded late on, with three goals in six minutes helping the newly promoted side pull off an improbable comeback win.
Edin Terzic was not pleased with the way his side performed on Saturday. And he felt that despite having a two goal cushion, they were never in control of the game.
"“We have to say quite honestly: it was a deserved defeat,” Terzic told Sky. “We didn’t play a good game. It was a very weak performance from us.”“We weren’t able to take control of the game, kept giving away chances. Still, when you lead by two goals until the 88th minute, you simply have to win the game. The way we then conceded the goals was brutally stupid and annoying.”"
Borussia Dortmund had a two goal lead going into the 89th minute of the game, courtesy of goals from Julian Brandt and Raphael Guerreiro. But Lee Buchanan, Niklas Schmidt, and Oliver Burke all scored late on to leave everyone inside the Signal Iduna Park stunned.
It was the first time in Bundesliga history that a team holding a two goal lead heading into the 89th minute failed to get the three points. The result will certainly sting for Borussia Dortmund, who were handed their first defeat of the season.
BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl said during his appearance on BILD-TV on Sunday that their performance against Werder Bremen was poor. And he challenged the players to take responsibility and recover from this early season setback.
"“We shouldn’t be losing this game,” Kehl said. “It was a poor performance. The team is now challenged, it bears the responsibility. They certainly understood that things weren’t perfect against Bremen and maybe in other games. We will not give up after the third matchday. We all want to make the Bundesliga more exciting.”"
Borussia Dortmund will look to return to winning ways next weekend as they travel to the German capital to take on the struggling Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.
