Borussia Dortmund came away with a disappointing 2-1 loss against Manchester City on matchday two of the Champions League. Late heroics from John Stones and Erling Haaland saved the game for City, which seemed to be in Dortmund’s control until the final ten minutes. Here are our player ratings.

BVB will be rather disappointed to not come away with at least a point from this match. Although the scoreline and statistics look to favor Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund had a clear game-plan from the jump and seemed to really stick to it throughout the match. Their strategy nearly led to them pulling out the three points until the 80th minute, when John Stones hit a howler of a goal from distance and then Haaland inevitably scored a few minutes later to seal the game for City.

Although disappointed, BVB should come away encouraged with the team’s display. Still missing several key players, including Gregor Kobel, the Black and Yellows nearly came away with a win against a team that is among the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League.

As such, the player ratings for the majority of BVB’s players will actually be higher than one might think seeing a 2-1 loss with only 34% possession. Borussia Dortmund played well, don’t let the scoreline diminish that.

Alexander Meyer (5/10)

The 2-1 result for this game is rather harsh for Alexander Meyer. The German keeper was actually rather solid in goal for BVB today. Although only credited with one save, Meyer was tested several times throughout the game with Manchester City’s onslaught of crosses from wide areas. He made a few great decisions in the first half to come out and catch dangerous crosses, showing good instincts and decision-making. However, he was a touch too slow to react for both goals, diminishing what was otherwise a reliable performance.
