Borussia Dortmund’s five recent transfer ‘What Ifs…?’
By Sean Findlay
Sergio Gómez
The numbers:
Bought for: 3 million euros
Sold for: 3.5 million euros plus add-ons
Current market value: 13 million euros
Thanks to a buyout clause, Borussia Dortmund were able to lure Sergio Gómez to the Westfalenstadion after he impressed at the U-17 Euros and the UEFA Youth League.
When the young Catalan arrived in Dortmund, he was known as a midfielder with an attacking mindset. Sometimes on the wing, sometimes in the middle of the park. He showed everything you’d expect from a player who came up in Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. He was technically gifted, had a near flawless passing game but lacked physicality.
With the hope that more senior football would help him become more physical, Borussia Dortmund sent him out on loan to SD Huesca for two seasons. He played in the second division as well as the top flight of Spanish football. Apparently, any progress he made wasn’t enough for a place in the BVB squad and he was sold to Anderlecht for a cut-price fee.
He was transformed into a left-back in Belgium by then head coach Vincent Kompany. And he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, which made him interesting for Manchester City who signed him this summer. Not exactly a coincidence when you keep in mind how many former Barca men are in charge at City.
Would he have a role on today’s squad?
Well, he has a place in the Manchester City team so you’d assume he would have a role at Borussia Dortmund, right? He might be a bit too redundant to Raphael Guerreiro who still does what Gómez does, only a little better. With more experience he’d be a great Guerreiro heir.
