Bundesliga Roundup: Union Berlin extend lead at the top; Bayern hit five past Freiburg
Union Berlin stunned Borussia Dortmund to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings, while Bayern Munich enjoyed a goal glut against SC Freiburg on matchday ten.
Union Berlin continued their stunning start to the season on Sunday as they outplayed Borussia Dortmund en route to a 2-0 win. Janik Haberer scored a first half brace to help Urs Fischer’s side move four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Bayern Munich moved up to second place after comfortably dispatching SC Freiburg on Sunday. Goals from Serge Gnabry, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Leroy Sané, Sadio Mané and Marcel Sabitzer gave the Bavarians a dominant 5-0 win.
Xabi Alonso was given a reality check on Saturday as Bayer Leverkusen suffered a 5-1 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt. Daichi Kamada led the way for the Eagles by scoring a brace. Randal Kolo Muani, Jesper Lindstrøm and Lucas Alario were also on target as Eintracht moved up to fifth place in the Bundesliga standings.
RB Leipzig survived a late scare and held on for a 3-2 win against Hertha Berlin. Emil Forsberg, Abdou Diallo and Willi Orban were all on target as Marco Rose’s side raced to a three goal lead in the first half. Dodi Lukebakio and Stevan Jovetic then found the back of the net to give Hertha a route back into the game. But it wasn’t enough, as Leipzig managed to claim the three points.
Steffen Tigges fired FC Köln to a come from behind 3-2 win over FC Augsburg by scoring two second half goals, including the winner in the 81st minute. Silas set the tone for VfB Stuttgart as they finally ended their winless run by cruising to a 4-1 win over VfL Bochum.
Marcus Thuram scored a brace but Borussia Mönchengladbach were held to a 2-2 draw by VfL Wolfsburg. Yannick Gerhardt and Omar Marmoush were on target as Niko Kovac’s side came from behind twice to rescue a point.
A brace from Robert Skov and a goal from Munas Dabbur helped TSG Hoffenheim claim a 3-0 win away to Schalke 04. Mainz 05 stunned the in-form Werder Bremen, with goals from Marcus Ingvartsen and Jae-sung Lee securing a 2-0 win.
