Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes that Mats Hummels has to be in Germany’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Mats Hummels is enjoying an excellent season with Borussia Dortmund and has fought his way back into contention to make the Germany squad for next month’s FIFA World Cup. And Dietmar Hamann believes that Hummels deserves to be a part of the Germany squad for the tournament in Qatar.
In his column for Sky Sport, the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder wrote:
"“I would definitely take Mats Hummels with me. He has certainly been one of the best three or four German centre-backs in recent months.”“In important games, a Süle or a Schlotterbeck might be missing from the starting XI, but Hummels always plays. That shows his form and how highly he is regarded. I can’t think of anything that speaks against him.”"
Buoyed by the competition for places following the summer arrivals of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, Mats Hummels has enjoyed a stunning renaissance this season. The centre-back has led the Borussia Dortmund defence with great resolve. And he continued his fine run of form by delivering a man of the match performance against Erling Haaland and Manchester City on Tuesday.
Hummels hasn’t played for the Germany national team since last year’s European Championships. But head coach Hansi Flick left the door open for the centre-back to earn a recall to the squad ahead of the World Cup.
According to BILD, Hummels has been named in Germany’s provisional squad for next month’s tournament. Hansi Flick will reveal Germany’s final 26-man squad for the World Cup on November 10.
Mats Hummels, who has won 76 caps for Germany, helped his country win the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Germany are set to face Spain, Costa Rica and Japan in the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
