Report: Borussia Dortmund show interest in Daichi Kamada
Borussia Dortmund have allegedly shown interest in signing Japanese international Daichi Kamada on a free transfer next summer, per Sport1.
Borussia Dortmund are seemingly compiling an extensive list of players they will look to target in the coming months, with Japanese international and Eintracht Frankfurt star Daichi Kamada rumored to be one of the club’s top targets. Kamada, 26, joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2017 from Sagan Tosu.
Despite early struggles in his years with Die Adler, Kamada has grown into one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting attacking players this season. The Japanese International currently sits on 10 goals and 2 assists across 17 appearances in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined. The player is known mostly for his attacking versatility and his prowess in terms of positioning.
Kamada’s eye for goal is also something the player has to be commended on, as this is an aspect of his game that he is showing great improvements in this season. While he’s always been good in terms of finding himself in a promising position, he is doing far more in terms of putting his chances away. He exemplified this in Frankfurt’s most recent clash with Dortmund in the league this season when he scored the leveler for 1-1. In a move where the gap in front of him was closing rapidly, Kamada received the ball on the edge of Dortmund’s box and rifled it into the bottom left corner, putting the hosts back on level terms and giving his team a fighting chance in the match.
Aside from his attacking prowess, Kamada has also shown the ability to play a more energetic, defensive role deeper in midfield as well, which adds to the appeal of his versatility. He is in the 87th percentile in terms of tackles when compared to similar players across Europe’s top 5 leagues (1.89 per 90).
If a move to Dortmund were to come to fruition, one would have to wonder what part of the pitch Die Schwarzgelben would plan to use the the Japanese international in. Dortmund’s attacking midfield is stacked with the likes of Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Gio Reyna. Moving him further back would mean Kamada would have to compete with the likes of Salih Özcan, Jude Bellingham, Mo Dahoud and Emre Can. The only way the addition of Kamada makes sense is if the club plan on selling players in these positions in the coming months.
Part of the enticing nature of a move for Kamada also stems from the fact that the player is out of contract come the summer of 2023. Under the right circumstances, having Kamada join would be a shrewd piece of business by the club. Kamada is the second player in recent weeks to be linked with a move to Dortmund from Frankfurt, with Jesper Lindstrøm also attracting interest from the Black and Yellows.
