Mats Hummels has been left out of the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite enjoying an excellent season so far with Borussia Dortmund.

Hansi Flick has decided to leave Mats Hummels out of his Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in a decision that comes as a big surprise. The Borussia Dortmund defender has been in stunning form this season, and has rolled back the years with some of his performances. But it appears that those performances were not enough for him to earn a ticket to Qatar.

After struggling for form and fitness for much of last year, Hummels has enjoyed a stunning resurgence this season. He has led the Borussia Dortmund defence from the front, delivering outstanding performances in big games against the likes of Manchester City and Eintracht Frankfurt.

There was hope that the 33 year old’s performances would help him earn a place in Germany’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But Hansi Flick has decided to leave him out, instead opting to go with Niklas Süle, Nico Schlotterbeck, Antonio Rüdiger, Matthias Ginter and Armel Bella-Kotchap as his centre-backs for the tournament in Qatar.

Hummels, who last represented Germany at last year’s European Championships, helped his national team win the World Cup in 2014.
