Niklas Süle (4/10)

Süle fared better than Hummels and Schlotterbeck defensively but that’s not saying much. Playing at right-back once again, the Germany international struggled to cope with Gladbach’s quality on the counter-attack. He did help set up Schlotterbeck’s goal with a fine header from a corner. But he was also too slow to react before Gladbach’s opener.

Mats Hummels (2/10)

Hummels’ 400th Bundesliga appearance turned into a nightmare as he had a torrid time against Marcus Thuram. It looked like he was still feeling the effects of being left out of the Germany squad for the World Cup. And Gladbach also took full advantage of his lack of pace. He was very lucky that Gladbach’s fifth goal in the second half was ruled out for a foul on him, even though the contact was rather minimal.

Nico Schlotterbeck (2/10)

Schlotterbeck had a game to forget and was beaten far too easily time and time again. He found it almost impossible to pick out the runs of the Gladbach forwards, as they ran in behind the BVB defence at will. The Germany international did score late in the first half, but the goal was a mere consolation strike in the end.

Raphael Guerreiro (4/10)

Guerreiro had some very encouraging moments going forward and also forced a save from the Gladbach goalkeeper. But he had a difficult time defensively and gave the Gladbach forwards way too much space.
