2021 vs 2022: A deep dive into Borussia Dortmund’s insane bad luck with injuries

Fixture pile-up a cause for injuries?
Have injuries affected Borussia Dortmund’s performances in the Bundesliga this season? They might have. As the World Cup break loomed, injuries piled up fuelled by a very tight and unrelenting schedule.
It is also notable that BVB had to play two teams who didn’t have any European matches right before the break, and they suffered damaging defeats in both games as some of the players appeared to be on their last legs.
That being said, a similar amount of injuries didn’t stop the team from winning 10 of their first 15 Bundesliga games last season.
As previously mentioned, last season’s early exit from the UEFA Champions League can’t be fully blamed on injuries, but it certainly didn’t help that Erling Haaland missed three of the six group stage matches.
You might also be surprised to learn that Gio Reyna has been available for five of Borussia Dortmund’s six UEFA Champions League matches so far this season after missing virtually all of last season.
