Raphaël Guerreiro is reportedly set to be replaced by Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Ramy Bensebaini when the Portuguese international’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Borussia Dortmund seem set to secure the services of yet another free agent in the form of Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Ramy Bensebaini. The Algerian international is set to replace the long-serving Raphaël Guerreiro at left back, according to multiple reports in Germany.

The claims come at a time when there have been many calls for yet another upheaval in the squad; a squad that already started to evolve under Sebastian Kehl’s stewardship this past summer. The rebuild seems to be moving full steam ahead with the club seemingly opting to bring in fresh blood rather than renewing a player like Guerreiro, who joined the club back in 2016.

The reports of Guerreiro’s impending departure are bittersweet. The Portuguese international has provided some very impressive displays on the pitch over the course of his BVB career, especially in an attacking sense.

The player is very skilful and has the ability to shoot from distance on the best of days, but on the worst of days he has received criticism for the defensive side of his game. As a defender, Rapha has in many instances found himself out of position when facing opposition attackers and just overall has not defended with the sort of conviction that one would expect from a player in his position.

With this in mind, Borussia Dortmund have seemingly decided that it is indeed time to move on, and Ramy Bensebaini is their desired target. The question remains however: Is Bensebaini the player Borussia Dortmund really want to replace the outgoing Guerreiro? The answer to that depends on what the BVB bosses really want from their left-back in terms of output.
