Borussia Dortmund to face competition from Barcelona for Daichi Kamada’s signature
According to the Frankfurter Rundschau, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona are both looking to act on their interest in Daichi Kamada, with Die Adler targeting Julian Brandt in response.
Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Daichi Kamada has, to this point, been very well documented. The Japanese international has also recently been linked with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, which goes to show that many clubs are starting to see the utility of signing him on a free transfer this coming summer.
Kamada is in the midst of a very strong season for Eintracht Frankfurt, with the attacking midfielder currently sitting on 12 goals and four assists in 21 appearances for Die Adler across all competitions. These numbers alone, combined with his expiring contract, will make him a very sound addition for the club that eventually signs him.
Frankfurt have done their best to keep hold of Kamada, however have inevitably reached their financial limits now that other clubs, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona included, are looking into the player as an option. It is curious because, especially in Dortmund’s case, attacking midfield is a saturated position.
And yet, when it comes to Frankfurt’s target to replace Kamada, Borussia Dortmund may find their answer in terms of finding the space they need in the squad for Kamada to flourish. Frankfurt are said to be eyeing a move for Julian Brandt should Kamada indeed leave.
The question is whether Borussia Dortmund would be willing to let Brandt go to Eintracht as the player has finally started to find some semblance of the form that got fans excited for his signing in the first place. I can see a scenario where BVB choose to keep both, with one slotting into a deeper role in the midfield. Kamada has played in a deeper position to good effect for Frankfurt, and he is also capable of playing out wide.
While a move for Daichi Kamada, especially on a free transfer, would be a great addition to the squad, before any such move is made the club needs to sort out where all these pieces will fit long-term. They must also decide if any players are to be moved on from the midfield. It would be a shame if BVB also neglected to focus on other positions in need of a renaissance, particularly at fullback, in favor of another attacking midfielder.
