Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier is set for yet another spell on the sidelines after suffering a torn muscle fibre in training.

Scenes of Thomas Meunier on crutches a few days ago painted a picture of yet another setback for the Borussia Dortmund right-back, who has spent much of this season on the sidelines. The Belgian international’s injury adds further complications for BVB at the right-back position, which has seen many players suffer injuries.

As of right now, there is no indication as to when Meunier will be able to return to action. What is certain, however, is that he will not feature in Die Schwarzgelben’s clash against FC Augsburg this weekend.

In his absence, head coach Edin Terzić is likely to deploy Niklas Süle or Marius Wolf at right-back. Süle has proven that he can play the position quite comfortably but the German international is a centre-back by trade. Similarly, Maruis Wolf is able to play in numerous positions, but cannot be counted on as a long-term solution.

One wonders whether Meunier’s injury will have any effect on Borussia Dortmund’s stance regarding winter signings. Meunier himself was linked with a move to Barcelona in late November and early December, but the player’s injury will certainly have put a damper on any such plans.

Whether Borussia Dortmund do indeed opt to make any potential additions in the advent of this new development remains to be seen. The club will certainly be hoping that, if no additions are made, Meunier will be sidelined for only a short period of time and that the players mentioned won’t have to fill in for him for an extended run.
