Borussia Dortmund have enjoyed an excellent start to 2023, winning all three of their matches since the Bundesliga restart. Edin Terzic’s side claimed a statement win away to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, showing that they are also capable of winning ugly.
The upturn in form has helped BVB move up to fourth place in the Bundesliga standings and close the gap to Bayern Munich from seven points to three.
What has also helped is the fact that Borussia Dortmund now have the majority of their players available again. With the likes of Sebastien Haller, Marco Reus, Gio Reyna and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens fully fit and available, the BVB attack looks sharper and stronger than it has done in quite some time. And Jude Bellingham has picked up right where he left off, leading from the front in every department.
Borussia Dortmund came from behind to register a 3-1 win when these two sides last met back in August. Goals from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Youssoufa Moukoko and Marius Wolf helped BVB get the three points after Michael Gregoritsch had given Freiburg the lead.

SC Freiburg managed to secure their first win of 2023 last weekend, as they comfortably dispatched Augsburg 3-1. But their 6-0 defeat to Wolfsburg on matchday 16 will still be fresh in the players’ minds. The thrashing gave Freiburg a reality check and forced them to switch to a back three. They responded by earning a credible 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, before cruising past Augsburg last weekend.
Christian Streich’s side are still enjoying a fairly impressive season, and will no doubt offer a tough test to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Freiburg have a very astute and resolute defence, led by former BVB centre-back Matthias Ginter. Their attack features a number of talented players, including Vincenzo Grifo, Ritsu Doan and Michael Gregoritsch.
Freiburg will feel that they were unlucky to lose to Borussia Dortmund in the reverse fixture. And they will no doubt be out to spoil their opponents’ party this weekend.
