Report: Borussia Dortmund initially wanted to offer Mahmoud Dahoud a new short-term contract
Borussia Dortmund were reportedly willing to offer Mahmoud Dahoud a one-year contract extension. But the midfielder wanted a more long-term solution.
Mahmoud Dahoud will be leaving Borussia Dortmund when his contract with the club expires at the end of the season. BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl revealed earlier this week that they will not be extending the midfielder’s expiring contract.
But according to WAZ, the Black and Yellows could initially well have imagined extending Dahoud’s contract beyond the end of the season. They were ready to offer him a new one-year contract. But the 27 year old and his agent wanted a longer-term deal. So the BVB bosses made the decision to part ways with Dahoud.
The Germany international, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2017, only signed a new one-year contract with the club in 2021. He also took a pay cut to stay with BVB despite interest from other clubs. Now he is set to leave BVB on a free transfer in the summer.
WAZ add that Mahmoud Dahoud is already attracting the interest of a number of clubs, and the likes of AC Milan, Napoli and Leicester City all made contact with the midfielder’s agent during the January transfer window.
At the time, Dahoud decided against a move away from Borussia Dortmund. But now he is free to hold talks with other clubs, and it will be interesting to see which club he decides to join in the summer. Dahoud has made a total of 137 appearances for BVB so far.
