Borussia Dortmund suffer Julian Brandt injury scare
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund will be sweating on the fitness of Julian Brandt ahead of this weekend’s Revierderby against Schalke 04.
Borussia Dortmund’s injury woes deepened on Tuesday evening as Julian Brandt was forced to come off after just five minutes with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Gio Reyna came on to replace the Germany international.
Brandt has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s top performers this season, and his all-round play has been crucial to the team’s stunning run of form since the turn of the year. The playmaker has scored nine goals and assisted a further five in 32 appearances across all competitions, and is the team’s leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga this season.
Edin Terzic’s side really struggled in attack in Brandt’s absence on Tuesday evening, and crashed out of the UEFA Champions League after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on aggregate.
An exact diagnosis on Julian Brandt’s injury is not yet available, so it remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined for. But Borussia Dortmund will certainly be hoping to have the 26 year old fit and available again very soon.
The Black and Yellows were already without a number of key players on Tuesday evening, including first-choice goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Karim Adeyemi, and Youssoufa Moukoko.
Following their elimination from the UEFA Champions League, Borussia Dortmund will now turn their attentions to the Bundesliga. Another crunch game lies in store for them this weekend as they take on local rivals Schalke 04 in the latest edition of the Revierderby.
