Bundesliga Roundup: Relegation battle tightens
Just three points separate the bottom five clubs in the Bundesliga standings after an eventful Matchday 24 saw Schalke earn a draw against Borussia Dortmund.
The 100th edition of the Revierderby in the Bundesliga headlined a thrilling round of fixtures. Schalke 04 came from behind twice to rescue a pulsating 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund.
The Black and Yellows took the lead twice through Nico Schlotterbeck and Raphael Guerreiro. But the Royal Blues bounced back on both occasions, with goals from Marius Bülter and Kenan Karaman helping them earn a share of the spoils.
The result helped Bayern Munich open up a two point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings after they came from behind to beat FC Augsburg 5-3 in the Bavarian derby.
VfL Bochum ended their losing run and moved up to 14th place in the Bundesliga standings by earning a 2-0 win over FC Köln. Kevin Stöger and Erhan Masovic were both on target for Thomas Letsch’s side.
TSG Hoffenheim suffered their seventh successive defeat in the Bundesliga as they lost 2-1 to SC Freiburg. Ritsu Doan’s 89th minute winner helped Freiburg move level on points with fourth placed Union Berlin.
RB Leipzig moved up to third place after seeing off the challenge of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Goals from Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg and Josko Gvardiol helped Marco Rose’s side earn a 3-0 win.
Union Berlin were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolfsburg, extending their winless run to four matches. Patrick Wimmer’s late goal helped Wolfsburg earn a point after Josip Juranovic had given Union Berlin the lead.
Eintracht Frankfurt failed to take advantage of Union Berlin’s slip-up, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart. Silas Katompa Mvumpa helped Stuttgart earn a valuable point in their quest to avoid relegation after Sebastian Rode had given Eintracht the lead.
Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat Werder Bremen 3-2, with Jeremie Frimpong starring for Xabi Alonso’s side. Hertha BSC and Mainz 05 played out a 1-1 draw, as the Berliners slipped to 15th place in the Bundesliga standings.
