Bundesliga title race: Borussia Dortmund go top as Bayern Munich fall to shock defeat

Bayern Munich were handed a shock 2-1 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, allowing Borussia Dortmund to move to the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Borussia Dortmund were given a big boost in their hopes of winning the Bundesliga title on Sunday evening, as Bayern Munich suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen. A second half brace from Exequiel Palacios helped Xabi Alonso’s side come from behind and claim a famous win, after Joshua Kimmich had given Bayern the lead in the first half.
The defeat, Bayern Munich’s third in the Bundesliga this season, saw them slip to second place in the standings. Julian Nagelsmann’s side are now one point behind Borussia Dortmund, who claimed a dominant 6-1 win at home to FC Köln on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund now have 53 points, and Bayern Munich have 52. But Bayern do have a superior goal difference (+45 vs +24).
There are still nine matches left to play in the Bundesliga before the end of the season. And perhaps the most important game of the campaign will take place in two weeks’ time, as Bayern Munich welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Allianz Arena.
There will be plenty riding on the latest edition of Der Klassiker as the two title rivals battle it out over the top spot in the Bundesliga standings.
Borussia Dortmund have a poor recent record against Bayern Munich, and haven’t won in Bavaria since 2017. But the Black and Yellows’ come from behind 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture will give them plenty of confidence ahead of this top of the table showdown.
