Hansi Flick was full of praise of Emre Can and Marius Wolf after the Borussia Dortmund duo was called up to the Germany squad for the international break.
A total of 12 Borussia Dortmund players have been called up by their respective national teams for the final international break of the 2022/23 season. Three BVB players have been named in the Germany squad, with two of those call-ups coming as a bit of a surprise.
Marius Wolf has been named in the Germany squad for the first time ever, while Emre Can has received his first call-up since the European Championships in 2021. Germany head coach Hansi Flick spoke about the duo during Monday’s press conference, and said that their call-ups are well deserved.
"“Both players have a lot to do with Borussia Dortmund being at the top of the table. They are both a mainstay for Dortmund in defence. Marius Wolf is very solid defensively, and his readiness to be involved both going forward and at the back is great. He’s fun to watch and deserves to be here.”“I’ve known Emre for a long time, and he’s also made progress, which is great to see. Both have a good mentality, which we need on the pitch.”"
Borussia Dortmund have enjoyed a stunning turnaround since the turn of the year, and now find themselves at the top of the Bundesliga standings. Emre Can and Marius Wolf have been crucial to the Black and Yellows’ defensive improvement. The former has marshalled the defence really well, while the latter has cemented his spot as the team’s first-choice right-back.
Germany have been searching for a solution to the right-back spot for some time now. So this international break could be a great opportunity for Wolf to establish himself as a regular in Hansi Flick’s plans.
Wolf could make his Germany debut on Saturday as Germany go up against Peru in a friendly match. Hansi Flick’s side are also due to take on Belgium on Tuesday, just four days before Borussia Dortmund’s top of the table Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich.
