Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić was extremely honest in the aftermath of Die Schwarzgelben’s damaging draw against VFB Stuttgart, calling it “unnecessary and stupid”.

In what has been the tightest title race to recent memory in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund have once again failed to take advantage of an opening to make up ground on Bayern Munich. The Rekordmeister stumbled in their clash with TSG Hoffenheim, drawing their game and providing Dortmund with a chance to catch them at the top of the table.

At the halfway mark against Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund were 2-0 up with Konstantinos Mavropanos having been sent off for two yellow cards. Die Schwarzgelben were flying, and if results had held, they’d be level on points with Bayern right now, neck and neck for the title. Goals from Sebastien Haller and Donyell Malen had BVB and fans alike on cloud nine, all they had to do was survive one more half against a relegation threatened Stuttgart side down to ten men.

And yet, even with the conditions in their favor, BVB managed to let Stuttgart back into the game. The Swabians took the game to BVB and achieved parity courtesy of goals from Tanguy Coulibaly and Josha Vagnoman.

Edin Terzić’s side managed to strike back in the dying embers of the game via Gio Reyna; a goal that seemed to be the defining moment of the match. The taste of victory quickly turned to ash as Stuttgart managed to counter and respond with the last play of the game courtesy of Silas.

Borussia Dortmund’s collapse against the 10 men of Stuttgart was a stunning turn of events, and yet one of the most BVB things that could possibly happen all at the same time. Edin Terzić summed up the result as “unnecessary and stupid”, but this on it’s own doesn’t sum up the sting that this performance has likely inflicted on the squad and fans alike.
