Gregor Kobel heaps praise on outstanding Mats Hummels

Gregor Kobel was full of praise of Mats Hummels after the defender rolled back the years with his performance against Wolfsburg.

Borussia Dortmund kept their hopes of winning the Bundesliga title alive on Sunday by earning a rampant 6-0 win over Wolfsburg. Despite the dominant scoreline, the Black and Yellows needed help from Gregor Kobel and Mats Hummels to get the three points at the Westfalenstadion.

Hummels made several important recoveries for his side, and also won the ball in the build-up to Borussia Dortmund’s second goal. And the Swiss international was full of praise of the BVB vice-captain after the game.

"“Mats had a very strong game. He’s doing an outstanding job this year. It’s certainly not easy when you don’t play every game. But he’s always there for the team. When he comes in, he always performs. He’s an outstanding central defender, an outstanding person, and very professional both on and off the pitch.”"

This season has certainly not been an easy one for Mats Hummels. The 34 year old was one of Borussia Dortmund’s top performers in the first half of the season, but failed to make the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He then lost his spot in the BVB starting XI and has only been used sporadically in the second half of the season.

Hummels’ current contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire at the end of the season. And it remains to be seen what his plans are beyond that. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said on Sunday that Hummels is someone they can always rely on.

Mats Hummels has shown time and time again this season that he is still more than capable of making an impact at the top level. Borussia Dortmund would like to keep him at the club beyond the end of the season. And the hope will be that the two parties can agree to an extension.
