Young goalkeeper Luca Unbehaun has decided to join third division side SC Verl on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund.

After spending the last seven seasons at Borussia Dortmund, Luca Unbehaun has found his next club. It was already clear that the 22 year old would be leaving the Black and Yellows when his contract expires at the end of the month. He has now made the switch to SC Verl on a free transfer, and will look to help them build on their 10th place finish in the 3. Liga last season.

Unbehaun came through the youth team ranks at Borussia Dortmund and was once regarded as one of the most promising young talents at the club. He was also one of the winners of the prestigious Fritz Walter Medal in the 2018/19 season, but wasn’t able to break into the BVB first-team.

He did appear on the first-team bench on a few occasions but never got the opportunity to make his competitive first-team debut for Borussia Dortmund.

Luca Unbehaun also lost his spot in the Borussia Dortmund II starting XI last season, with Marcel Lotka being the club’s preferred option between the sticks. He made a total of 59 appearances for BVB II, but only six of them came in the recently concluded season.

Unbehaun will now look to make a fresh start at SC Verl, where he is expected to be the first-choice goalkeeper. Still only 22, the former Germany U-20s international will hope to feature regularly next season and realise his potential.
