Burnley are said to be closing in on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Soumaïla Coulibaly on loan with a mandatory buy clause.

Soumaïla Coulibaly is set to leave Borussia Dortmund, with newly promoted English Premier League side Burnley closing in on his signature. According to Fabrizio Romano, the defender will join Burnley on a loan deal with a mandatory buy clause. The Black and Yellows will apparently receive a total fee in the region of 15 million euros.

Coulibaly joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, but injuries and high competition for places prevented him from getting a real opportunity in the first-team.

The 19 year old mostly featured for the BVB U-23s in the 3. Liga, and was limited to just two first-team appearances. He made his Bundesliga debut in April, but had a difficult outing as Borussia Dortmund were held to a 3-3 draw by Stuttgart.

Soumaïla Coulibaly will hope that joining Burnley will allow him to get more playing time and match experience at the first-team level.

The highly rated centre-back will also get the opportunity to train and play under legendary defender Vincent Kompany, which will no doubt be great for his development. Kompany was also the coach who helped turn former BVB winger Sergio Gomez into a left-back at Anderlecht, which earned him a move to Manchester City.

It is possible that Borussia Dortmund will look to bring in a new centre-back following Coulibaly’s impending departure. Mats Hummels, Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle are the only senior centre-backs in the BVB ranks at the moment.
