Bundesliga Roundup: Harry Kane scores on debut, Kevin Behrens nets hat-trick for Union Berlin

Harry Kane had a Bundesliga debut to remember, while Kevin Behrens scored a hat-trick for Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen claimed a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig on matchday one of the 2023/24 season.

The new Bundesliga season began with a bang this past weekend, as Bayern Munich enjoyed a thumping 4-0 win over Werder Bremen. Harry Kane registered a goal and an assist on his Bayern debut, and Leroy Sané scored a brace before Mathys Tel added a third late on.

Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund did not enjoy the best of starts. But Donyell Malen’s late winner still helped them beat FC Köln 1-0.

Union Berlin picked up right where they left off last season, as Kevin Behrens scored a hat-trick to help them earn a 4-1 win over Mainz 05. Miloš Pantović was also on target for the Berliners, while Anthony Caci scored what proved to be only a consolation goal for the 05ers.

Goals from Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Florian Wirtz gave Bayer Leverkusen a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig. Xavi Alonso’s side got off to a blistering start and raced to a two goal lead, before Dani Olmo pulled a goal back for Leipzig. Wirtz then made it 3-1 in the second half, before Loïs Openda halved the deficit with a goal on his debut. But Leverkusen held on for the all important three points in the topspiel.

Tomáš Čvančara scored a 97th minute equaliser as Borussia Mönchengladbach played out a thrilling 4-4 draw against FC Augsburg. Gladbach took a two goal lead early on thanks to goals from Ko Itakura and Čvančara. Elvis Rexhbecaj then halved the deficit, only for Nathan Ngoumou to double Gladbach’s lead again.

Augsburg weren’t to be denied though, and goals from Maximilian Bauer, Sven Michel and Ruben Vargas helped them turn the game on its head. But Čvančara held his nerve and scored a 97th minute penalty to ensure a share of the spoils.

VfB Stuttgart enjoyed a perfect start to their season as they thrashed VfL Bochum 5-0. Silas Katompa Mvumpa and Serhou Guirassy both netted braces for Stuttgart, and Dan-Axel Zagadou was also on target.

SC Freiburg began their season with a 2-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim. An own goal from Attila Szalai gave Christian Streich’s side the lead, before Roland Sallai added a second. Ozan Kabak scored to bring Hoffenheim back into the game, but Freiburg managed to get the three points in the end.

Randal Kolo Muani scored the only goal of the game as Eintracht Frankfurt defeated newly promoted side Darmstadt. While Heidenheim’s Bundesliga debut ended in defeat, as Jonas Wind scored a brace to help Wolfsburg earn a 2-0 win.
