Niclas Füllkrug: Borussia Dortmund’s limitations being exposed against good teams
By Tushar Bahl
Niclas Füllkrug has admitted that Borussia Dortmund’s limitations are being exposed by top teams after they fell to a 2-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund continued their winless run in the Bundesliga on Saturday as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart. Even though Stuttgart needed an 83rd minute winner from Serhou Guirassy to get the three points, there was a big gulf in quality between the two sides on the pitch.
The Black and Yellows were perhaps lucky to only suffer a 2-1 defeat, and Niclas Füllkrug was critical of the approach they took towards the game. The striker also admitted that Borussia Dortmund’s limitations are being exposed by good teams.
"“It was a deserved defeat,” Füllkrug told Sky Sport. “We didn’t get a grip on the game at all, we were lacking a lot on many, many levels. And we perhaps didn’t even have the perfect approach to win this game. On top of that, we lacked intensity and tenacity in many areas.”“Unfortunately, we have to be honest and admit that our limitations are sometimes being exposed against many good teams – although we have the resources to be better.”"
Stuttgart made a blistering start to the game on Saturday, and Borussia Dortmund did not seem to have any answers on how to deal with them in the first-half. But Edin Terzic’s side took the shock lead through Niclas Füllkrug, before goals from Deniz Undav and Serhou Guirassy helped the Swabians turn the game around.
The defeat leaves Borussia Dortmund in a bit of a precarious position in the Bundesliga, even if there is still a long way to go in the season. And with a tough run of matches in store after the international break, those in charge will be desperate to find solutions to arrest this slide.
