Borussia Dortmund made it three wins in a row in the Bundesliga following a narrow 1-0 victory against Wolfsburg on Sunday. Karim Adeyemi was the lone scorer of the evening as the German international's 20th-minute strike was enough to earn them all three points at the Signal Iduna Park.
Following the late Champions League capitulation in Juventus last week which saw them throw away a two-goal lead to draw 4-4, Der BVB hoped for a rebound and get their campaign back on track. Having won their last seven home games to Die Wolfe, the odds were clearly stacked in their favor.
Nico Kovac's side took some time to find their feet, but went ahead after 20 minutes into the kick-off as Adeyemi whipped in a stunner from outside the box that left Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara with no chance.
Wolfsburg, with a toothless display upfront, could never fight their way back into the tie and finished without mustering a single shot on target despite nine attempts, a damning indictment of their misfiring frontline.
Here are some key talking points from the match:
1) Karim Adeyemi is off the mark in the Bundesliga
Just days after netting his first goal of the season against Juventus in the Champions League, Karim Adeyemi opened his account in the Bundesliga for the 2025-26 season too. And he did so in quite some style, as the 23-year-old netted an unstoppable effort from 20 yards out.
Upon receiving a pass from Julian Ryerson, Adeyemi took a touch and scampered up a few steps before proceeding to unleash a fearsome piledriver that whizzed past the despairing dive of Grabara. After going three consecutive games without a goal, he's now struck two in two.
2) Dortmund display defensive strength
After the chaotic match in Turin which exposed Dortmund's defensive shortcomings, the side registered a clean sheet on Sunday, their third in a row in the Bundesliga. The Black and Yellows held steady for the most part, not allowing Wolfsburg to get near the goal and forcing them to try their luck only from range.
On one occasion, Die Wolfe struck the crossbar as Konstantinos Koulierakis hit the underside of the post which came off the line, but Dortmund cleared the danger. Although Wolfsburg are no Juventus, the BVB were solid at the back nonetheless, as their visitors couldn't muster a single shot on target.
3) Dortmund's strongest start to Bundesliga in eight years
With 10 points in four games, Borussia Dortmund have made their best start to a Bundesliga season since 2017. It all began on a chaotic note against St. Pauli, wherein they relinquished a 3-1 lead in the final few minutes of the game to draw 3-3.
But since then, there's been considerable improvement from Kovac's team, winning the next three and keeping a clean sheet in each of them. It's a good start on paper and gives them some early momentum in the race, but it will be interesting to see if Dortmund can keep up this form in the long run and challenge Bayern Munich for the title.
