A brace from Serhou Guirassy guided Borussia Dortmund past Sabah FK in the Champions League, as they secured a 2-1 victory in Baku tonight. The win also ended their three-game winless in all competitions after the international break, and boosted their progression hopes in Europe again as the BVB now have six points in three.
Here are 3 winners and 2 losers from Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 win over Sabah FK:
Winner #1: Serhou Guirassy
Let's start with the obvious. Serhou Guirassy had everyone concerned after going five games without a goal, but took both his chances with aplomb tonight to make a difference, and roar back into form in resounding fashion. Six goals for the season now, including four in just the Champions League.
Loser #1: Ramy Bensebaini
With Joane Gadou benched after a series of starts, Ramy Bensebaini had the chance to reclaim his spot here but the Algerian had a stinker in defense. Not that he did anything wrong, but couldn't make a big impact either, completely eclipsed by the better centre-backs on the night. He often went down in duels and blazed a shot into the stands in the second half.
Winner #2: Joey Veerman
Back in the starting XI, the Dutchman was the architect of their game today. He made crucial line-breaking passes and switched plays out wide by linking up brilliantly with the wing-backs. A free-kick in the first half from the edge of the box needed a save from Pokatilov just before line, but Veerman made up for that by teeing up Guirassy later for 2-1 with a lovely cross inside the box.
Loser #2: Fabio Silva
Technically, he had a good game. Some excellent runs through Sabah's midfield and defense and highly proactive in attack, but his passing wasn't the best whereas his finishing left a lot to be desired. The Portuguese attempted four shots in the match, none of which came through. His best chance arrived midway through the second half following a love through ball from Jobe Bellingham, but Silva contrived to fire it wide.
Winner #3: Carney Chukwuemeka
Felix Nmecha was a good candidate here, but we're going with the birthday boy on this occasion. Kovac's gift for the Austrian tonight was place in the starting lineup and he didn't disappoint. Chukwuemeka's work-ethic was encouraging, as the midfielder ran his socks off and playing a big role in circulating the ball, whilst also tracking back to help out defensively whenever Sabah were on the attacking foot. Most notably, he combined superbly with Silva in the build-up to their opening goal.
