The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway as 48 nations compete for the ultimate prize. We're only a few games down but already been treated to some exciting matchups as fans look forward to more in the coming days.
Borussia Dortmund have 10 of their stars competing with their respective sides at the North American showpiece, with a most of them already playing their opening fixtures as Ramy Bensebaini, Marcel Sabitzer and Carney Chukwuemeka are scheduled to mark their first appearance tomorrow.
However, many of the ex-BVB stars are present at the World Cup too, whipping up some nostalgia for the club supporters who are keenly following all the latest developments from the competition. Here are five former Dortmund stars worth keeping an eye on:
5) Christian Pulisic (USA)
USA were billed as among the sides that could make a serious run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and those predictions were solidified with a stunning 4-1 demolition of Paraguay in their opening game last week. Former BVB star Pulisic was at the heart of it all, running the show with his insane attacking qualities while also bagging an assist.
4) Jude Bellingham (England)
Even as Jobe Bellingham waits for his turn with the national team, his older brother Jude Belligham will be one of the key players for England at the FIFA World Cup. A prolific creator with excellent passing range and capable of unlocking any defense, the former Dortmund ace could be set for a stellar debut at the tournament.
3) Achraf Hakimi (Morocco)
Born in Madrid but made in Dortmund, Hakimi is once again called-up to Morocco's young and dynamic side that is aiming for another deep run at the FIFA World Cup following their historic fourth-place finish at the Qatar showpiece in 2022. The Atlas Lions began their campaign with an encouraging 1-1 draw against the mighty Brazil with Hakimi turning in a splendid display on the flanks.
2) Ousmane Dembele (France)
Following another epic run with PSG that resulted in a second consecutive UEFA Champions League trophy, Ousmane Dembele now gears up to take the FIFA World Cup by storm. France are aiming for their third trophy in the competition and the former BVB star can boost his case for another Ballon d'Or should he bring his A-1 game here.
1) Erling Haaland (Norway)
Erling Haaland has come a long way since his Borussia Dortmund days. He's now leading the Norwegian squad out for their first campaign in the FIFA World Cup since 1998 following a mammoth 16-goal salvo in the qualifiers. The striker is among the top favorites to clinch the Golden Boot and it will be interesting to see how far he can take his team at the tournament.
