Borussia Dortmund sporting director Nils-Ole Book heaped praise on his team after they finished their 2025-26 Bundesliga season with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen.
Serhou Guirassy and Yan Couto were among the goals for the BVB in the second half as Niko Kovac's side braved some early storm from their spirited hosts.
With that, Dortmund finished with 73 points in second place, their highest finish since 2023, and with Champions League football also long secured.
Ole Book, who was in attendance for the final league fixture today, said it was a good way to end a 'good season'.
"“The best season in a long time – the best defence, the fewest goals conceded. That defensive solidity is worth highlighting. And we’ve also achieved a lot in attack. Today’s win was well deserved and therefore a fitting end to a good season. Now we’re fully focused on preparing for the new season.”"he said after the game
Indeed, the Black and Yellows conceded only 34 goals from 34 league games this season, fewer than any team in the division. Even champions Bayern Munich shipped in two more than them as Dortmund were one of the meanest outfits in Europe.
For more context, that's also 17 fewer than what Dortmund managed in 2024-25 season, a sign of how much they have improved defensively under Niko Kovac, who oversaw his first full season in-charge of the club.
Speaking of the attack, Dortmund boast the best record after only Bayern (122) and Stuttgart (71) with 70 goals scored, just one fewer than last year. A total of 17 players found the back of the net for them, with Guirassy the leading man after scoring 17 times.
One big criticism that faced this BVB side though, was their inability to kill the game off or lapses in defense in the unlikeliest of situations. Their record against the big sides in the division also received scrutiny as Die Borussen picked up just 11 points from a possible 30 against the teams that finished in top six places.
These are some issues that Kovac will need to address next term as they look to end their long wait for a ninth Bundesliga title. A summer of massive changes now awaits Signal Iduna Park, as a host of first-team stars are expected to depart while some fresh legs will be roped in too.
Exciting times ahead for Borussia Dortmund.
