Though second most successful team in the German top-flight, Borussia Dortmund have never been serial winners in any competition like their mightier rivals Bayern Munich.

Whether it's the Bundesliga or the DFB-Pokal cup, their success in these tournaments have come in patches; a few trophies here and a few trophies there.

In the German Supercup too, their record isn't the most inspiring: of 12 previous appearances, they've won and lost six each.

We've already discussed the wins. Now let's delve into the sextuplet of defeats that Dortmund have suffered in the cup:

2011: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 (3-4 on pens.) Schalke

The only time the Revierderby has taken place in the German Supercup was in 2011. Dortmund had completed a historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double under Jurgen Klopp that year, while Schalke finished as the league runners-up.

When the rivals met in the Supercup, held at the Veltins-Arena, it was expectedly a tense affair with neither side able to find a breakthrough. A penalty shootout beckoned, where misses from Kevin Grosskreutz and Ivan Perisic handed the trophy to Schalke.

2012: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Bayern Munich

After having won the Supercup in their first three appearances, Dortmund lost in their next two. The second defeat came just a year on from their first, with Bayern prevailing 2-1 in Munich. Mario Mandzukic and Thomas Muller got the job done inside the opening 11 minutes, as Robert Lewandowski's 75th-minute strike for the BVB was nothing more than a consolation.

2016: Bayern Munich 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

Having lost the cup final to Bayern just a few months ago, Dortmund looked to avenge it with a Supercup triumph over their rivals. But Carlo Ancelotti's side were no match for them, as second-half goals from Arturo Vidal and Thomas Muller secured them a 2-0 victory in Dortmund.

2017: Borussia Dortmund 2-2 (4-5 on pens.) Bayern Munich

This was one much tighter than the last. Dortmund relinquished their lead not once but twice, including through an own goal from Roman Burki in the 88th minute which handed Bayern a lifeline by sending the game into shootouts. Just like in 2010, the BVB lost this one too, with Sebastian Rode and Marc Bartra missing their spot-kicks.

2020: Bayern Munich 3-2 Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund were the cup holders here, after beating Bayern to win the 2019 edition. But it appeared to slip away as the hosts raced to a 2-0 lead through Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Muller. Julian Brandt pulled one back before half-time while Erling Haaland leveled the scores after the break. Another shootout became increasingly likely until Joshua Kimmich fired the winner with only eight minutes of normal time remaining.

2021: Bayern Munich 3-1 Borussia Dortmund

Die Borussen's last appearance in the Supercup also carries some bitter memories. And against Bayern, no less. Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller struck in either halves to put Bayern 2-0 up, before Marco Reus made it 2-1 in the 64th minute. Dortmund seemed to have a silver lining, but their former striker Lewandowski came back to haunt them again 10 minutes later and win it for Bayern.
