Borussia Dortmund play in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against arch-rivals Bayern Munich at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday as Niko Kovac and co. aim to make an early title statement with a win.
Following a long summer of preparations which saw them indulge in six friendly matches and rope in six new players, the time has come for Die Borussen to finally get down to business.
With Bayern Munich clinching both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal trophies last season, Dortmund qualified for the 2026 edition of the Supercup as league runners-up.
It marks their 13th appearance in the single-legged, one-off cup competition, and have won it a total of six times - the most behind only Bayern (11).
Let's have a look at each of their six German Supercup wins:
1989: Bayern Munich 3-4 Borussia Dortmund
A seven-goal thriller on Dortmund's first appearance, full of twists and turns. Bayern led twice in the game, but Dortmund equalized each time with Gunter Breitzke scoring a brace. Jurgen Wegmann then put the BVB in front after 64 minutes but Radmilo Mihajlovic made it 3-3 soon after. Then with only two minutes of normal time remaining, Andreas Moller popped up with a winner for Dortmund, culminating an absolute classic.
1995: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Borussia Monchengladbach
Six years later, Dortmund were back in the Supercup as Bundesliga winners. Borussia Monchengladbach were the opponents this time, having clinched the DFB-Pokal cup. But unlike their first appearance, this one was a rather drab affair with Julio Cesar winning it for the Prussians in the 71st minute.
1996: Borussia Dortmund 1-1 (4-3 on pens.) FC Kaiserslautern
Having retained their league crown, Dortmund secured their passage into the Supercup once more. Kaiserslautern managed to give them a real scare by going in front after 55 minutes, but the BVB equalized through Carsten Wolters just 11 minutes later.
With no further goals to separate the sides, the match headed into a penalty shootout where Stefan Reuter and Moller both missed their attempts for Dortmund. Kaiserslautern were firmly in control of the tie, until three consecutive misses turned the screw and the Black and Yellow walked away with the cup.
2013: Bayern Munich 2-4 Borussia Dortmund
Just two months after contesting the all-German Champions League final in London, the Der Klassiker rivals came up against each other once more in the Supercup where Dortmund managed to get their revenge for the Wembley defeat.
An early from Marco Reus was cancelled out by Arjen Robben in the second half, but two goals in two minutes - an own goal from Daniel Van Buyten followed by another strike from Ilkay Gundogan - put the BVB 3-1 up. Robben pulled one back again as the treble winners were still in tie, but Reus netted a fourth late on to seal it.
2014: Bayern Munich 0-2 Borussia Dortmund
Jurgen Klopp's final season as the Dortmund manager began with another Supercup trophy. Having completed a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double the previous season, Bayern were expected to pick up a third medal here, but Die Borussen sprung a real surprise though.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan's 23rd-minute strike had Dortmund's noses in front at the break, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came to haunt the Bavarians after the break, scoring shortly after the hour mark to make it 2-0.
2019: Bayern Munich 0-2 Borussia Dortmund
After two losses to Bayern in 2016 and 2017, Dortmund were finally able to exact revenge in 2019. Once again, the Bavarians entered the tie as domestic double winners while the BVB came second in the league which qualified them for the cup.
The first half didn't produce any goals as the rivals remained locked at 0-0. But Paco Alcacer broke the deadlock in the 48th minute to give Dortmund the lead. Jadon Sancho put the final nail in Bayern's coffin another 21 minutes later with their second of the evening.
