Borussia Dortmund have only lost 1 game in the league this season. Despite that they are 6 points behind Bayern Munich in the league table. The gap between the two sides even reached 11 points at one point but a loss to Augsburg and a draw against Hamburg for Bayern closed the gap between the two teams.
Before the dropped points Bayern were on an amazing run in which they have only dropped points in 2 games against Union Berlin and Mainz. They looked like they were going to end the season without any losses and even without many points being squandered.
The two games however are an indication that Bayern aren’t perfect. If teams decide to go for it there is a chance they can take points from the record champions.
This is also a lesson for Borussia Dortmund. If they can continue on their winning run the gap can eventually narrow and a genuine title race might be there.
When BVB beat Mainz 4-0 last weekend the gap between the two teams was only 3 points. This put the pressure on Bayern ahead of the game against Werder Bremen. The Bavarians did manage to pass this test with flying colors having won 3-0 but the possibility for a close run at the title is there. The gap also narrowed to only 3 points the week before until Bayern managed to beat in form Hoffenheim to stretch the lead back to 6 points.
BVB have been criticized for lack of exciting football but very few people will care as long as the team continues to win. The Black and Yellows are the most in form team in the league having won 6 of their last 6 games. Niko Kovac will be glad with the showing of his men and their ability to continue to collect all 3 points.
When Dortmund faced another in-form team in Mainz who have managed to collect 12 points from a possible 15 many people assumed there would be struggle. There was also the memory that Mainz were responsible for spoiling Dortmund's title celebrations back in 2023. But BVB cruised to a 4-0 win and showed no sign of slowing down during the game. It is for this reason that now many assume the title race is far from over.
As long as BVB keep winning their games the pressure will eventually mount on Bayern. Even though Vincent Kompany's team are showing no sign of slowing down being thereabouts during the crucial end of the season can pay up big for Dortmund.
