Borussia Dortmund are currently on a summer break following the conclusion of 2025-26 season but their fixtures for next season are coming to light already.
It's already been confirmed that BVB will host Bayern Munich for the season-opener in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on 22 August, days after their friendly to AS Roma.
Now, Dortmund's opening game in next season's German Cup has also been confirmed following a draw today.
Former referee Deniz Aytekin drew all 32 fixtures of the first round at the German Football Museum in Dortmund on Sunday.
Dortmund play HEBC Hamburg
Our lads were drawn against fifth-tier minnows HEBC Hamburg away from home and the match will be played on either 1 or 2 September 2026.
This marks the first official clash between the sides with Niko Kovac's side favorites on paper to progress given their squad strength and experience.
Moreover, the BVB haven't lost in the first round of the German Cup since 2005-06 season when Eintracht Braunschweig beat them 2-1.
HEBC Hamburg will also be the fourth club from Hamburg that Dortmund will play, having previously played Hamburger SV, St. Pauli and Concordia Hamburg.
As for defending champions Bayern, they begin their title defense against Vfl Osnabruck, who got promoted to 2.Bundesliga from the third tier last season.
Last season's runners-up Stuttgart are away to Hansa while RB Leipzig play Eintracht Trier.
Dortmund hoping for a 6th title
Borussia Dortmund are the most successful club in the German Cup after Bayern Munich with five titles but their latest triumph came in 2021.
Since then, the Black and Yellows have lost out in the round of 16 thrice, while bowing out in the quarter-finals and the second round once.
With Bayern once again hegemonizing the Bundesliga, the cup presents a great opportunity for them to win a silverware but Dortmund's record lately hasn't been glorious.
As the BVB look to end their five-year trophy-drought next season, it's imperative for them to approach the cup games with utmost seriousness.
