Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac is set for a lengthy spell with the club. According to reports, the former Croatian international is set to be offered a new contract by BVB after a strong run since taking over in February 2025.
During his first three months at the club, towards the back end of the 2024-25 campaign, he lifted the side out of the rut and guided them to a top-four finish to secure Champions League football, before taking them even further and clinching a runners-up spot in the league this year, breaking numerous records along the way too.
Content with the impact he's had so far, Dortmund are gearing up to offer Kovac a new deal that would keep him well beyond 2027, when his current term expires. According to Spot Bild, he could sign the new contract in October, once club football resumes after the ongoing international break.
But even before that, the club is aiming to tie down managing directors such as Carsten Cramer, Lars Ricken and Thomas Treß to new deals too. Kovac had previously extended his terms in August 2025 as reward for a strong rescue campaign earlier in the year when the club was going through the motions under Nuri Sahin.
Should fans be happy with Kovac's extension?
Beyond the veneer of Dortmund restoring themselves among the top two sides in German football, there's been a palpable discontent among the fans for the kind of football that's actually being played under Kovac.
The BVB might be picking up points at a higher rate under him than any of their recent managers, but they've often looked disjointed and lacked fluidity in their game too, relying chronically on individual moments of brilliance to save their beacon.
Another major Achilles heel we saw in the team last season is their ability to crumble in high-pressure games, regularly dropping points against sides residing in the top six positions on the league table while also falling short in their Champions League duels with other big guns of Europe.
Although Dortmund have seemed more balanced this season (and resolute in defense) following a summer of massive reinforcements, their overall gameplay remains unconvincing. Niko Kovac has managed to paper over the cracks with some wise substitutions, but fans have their doubts over the side's ability to deliver trophies on the long run under Kovac's patchy brand of football.
Rest assured, they won't be happy with the news of him extending his contract.
