Borussia Dortmund cannot compete with Bayern Munich unless they add more star quality to its lineup. They need to make sure that Jadon Sancho returns to the club.

Last weekend in the Bundesliga, Bayern secured the title as they defeated Stuttgart 4-2, with Dortmund losing 2-1 to Hoffenheim.

Dortmund have not won the Bundesliga since the 2011/12 season when Jurgen Klopp was still in charge. The Black and Yellow have been runners-up seven times since. They came close to winning the division in the 2022/23 season, but lost to Mainz on the final day of the season, which handed Bayern another title.

Recently, Dortmund has had great success nurturing young English players. Sancho, Jude Bellingham, and Jamie Gittens have all developed their talents at the club before being sold on for big profits.

Letting Gittens go has left Dortmund short of options on the left flank. However, Niko Kovac does favor a 3-4-2-1 formation with wing-backs and attacking midfielders rather than out-and-out wingers.

Borussia Dortmund need to stregthen their forward line

Nevertheless, Dortmund have come up short in the Bundesliga once again. Kovac's side was also defeated by Atalanta in the Champions League playoff round. There will be no new silverware at the Signal Iduna Park this season as the Black and Yellow had also been knocked out of the DFB-Pokal by Bayer Leverkusen.

Dortmund's roster lacks star quality since the departures of Sancho, Bellingham, and Marco Reus, who now plays for the LA Galaxy. Reus is at the back end of his career, Bellingham is now a star at Real Madrid, but there is a chance that Sancho could return.

Sancho has done so in the past after his move to United went badly wrong. He returned to Dortmund on loan in 2024 and helped the club reach the Champions League final. However, he did not join the German side permanently and instead went on loan to Chelsea.

Despite helping Chelsea to win the Europa Conference League, they did not take up the option to make his move permanent. This season, Sancho has been loaned out to Aston Villa, but he has scored just once and provided only three assists in 33 games for Unai Emery's side.

It may not have worked out for Sancho at three Premier League clubs now, but he has already proved himself in the Bundesliga. Rumors of a return to Dortmund still prevail, and it could be the perfect place for Sancho to get his career back on track.
