Borussia Dortmund's young defender Daniel Svensson has been called up to Sweden's 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Blagult, who are set to make their 13th appearance at the tournament, have officially named their team that will be traveling to US, Canada and Mexico for the games.

Head coach Graham Potter has named Svensson among his defenders which comes as little surprise given his meteoric rise at Dortmund this season.

The 24-year-old has been a revelation on that left flank for the BVB with his buccaneering runs forward without ever sacrificing his defensive duties.

He's averaged almost 84% pass completion rate in the Bundesliga this season, another 1.2 tackles and 2.3 clearances per game, while also chipping in with two goals and assists each. The Swede has bagged two more in the Champions League.

Svensson has always started on the left side of the midfield, giving him the license to roam forward while also tracking back in transitions.

But in the Swedish set-up though, the player has been fielded in various positions during the qualifiers; the left midfielder, left winger, left-back, central midfielder and even as the right midfielder.

He started in a five-man defense for their playoff finals against Poland in March and completed full 90 minutes, delivering a strong performance as Sweden prevailed 3-2 to book their place in the cup.

As a result, Svensson is all set for his first major tournament in Sweden's colors. Although he has only 11 caps to his name so far - he only made his international debut in October 2024 - the Dortmund star is expected to feature in the starting XI as the Nordic side face Tunisia, the Netherlands and Japan in a tough-looking Group F.

Joining Dortmund originally on a loan in January 2025 from Danish side Nordsjaelland, the BVB proceeded to make his move permanent in the summer and he's since appeared 44 times for the club, including in all but one Bundesliga game this season as Svensson was integral to BVB achieving runners-up finish.

He is likely to feature in their final game of the 2025-26 season this Saturday away to Werder Bremen before heading off to join Sweden's training camp. They renew their World Cup preparations on 1 June with a friendly game to Norway before facing Greece on 4 June in Solna. The side kick-off their tournament against Tunisia on 14 June in Guadalupe, Mexico.
