Switzerland have announced their squad for the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League fixtures and Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel makes the cut.
La Nati return to action for the first time since their historic quarter-final finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and head coach Murat Yakin has named a strong squad once more.
They are scheduled to play North Macedonia (A), Scotland (A), Slovenia (H) and North Macedonia again (H) from 26 September to 6 October in a prolonged international window.
Kobel summoned by Yakin
Borussia Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel is among the 25 players called-up, and it's hardly surprising. He's been their No.1 choice in goal for sometime now and proved his mettle at the World Cup too.
Kobel kept two clean sheets at the tournament, against Algeria in the Round of 32 and against Colombia in the Round of 16. In that second game, he also saved a penalty in their shootouts triumph.
Even in the 3-1 loss to Argentina, the 28-year-old made four saves, including one on none other than Lionel Messi himself.
He's started the 2026-27 season on a rich vein of form with the BVB, registering two clean sheets in three Bundesliga games as well as saving seven shots.
Having made his international debut with Switzerland in 2021, Kobel has garnered 27 caps for his team. Coincidentally, he broke into La Nati's set-up just weeks into his Dortmund tenure.
Known for his quick wit, excellent distribution and a commanding physical presence inside the box, Kobel has kept six clean sheets with the national team and conceded just 36 goals, which is an average of just over one per game.
Former Dortmund defender also called-up
Another player with a Dortmund connection in the Swiss team is Manuel Akanji, who has also been summoned by Murat Yakin for their upcoming clashes.
He spent four years at the club after joining from FC Basel in 2018, accruing 158 appearances in all competitions, including 119 in the Bundesliga.
Akanji established himself as a vital figure in defense which paved his way to Manchester City and now Inter Milan.
He's also closing in on a century of appearances for Switzerland, having gained 87 caps with the side over the last nine years.
His importance in the national team is underlined by the fact that Akanji played every minute of their World Cup games in this year's showpiece without ever getting substituted.
