Paris Saint-Germain have truly etched their names among the greatest club sides ever. For the second year in a row, the Ligue 1 giants won the Champions League, the ultimate prize in football and became just the second team in history to retain their crown.

Trailing 1-0 at half-time against Arsenal, former Borussia Dortmund star Ousmane Dembele converted a penalty after the hour mark to draw the French champions level while Bradley Barcola missed a terrific chance late on to win the match for them.

As there was no separating the sides even after extra-time, the final - for the 12th time in the competition's history - went into a penalty shootout where PSG emerged 4-3 winners after Gabriel Magaelhaes overhit his attempt on the fifth try.

An electric frenzy erupted across the Puskas Arena as PSG players and management wheeled away in bacchanalic celebrations upon clinching just their second Champions League title in history, coming just a year on from their maiden win.

Borussia Dortmund, the last team to knock PSG out

While the Parisians have lost a few games along the way in both their title triumphs, it's been over two years since a team knocked them out of the competition. And which the last side to achieve that feat you may ask? Borussia Dortmund!

Yes, the BVB are the last European team to send PSG packing from the Champions League. Back in the 2023-24 season, the sides clashed in the semi-final stage where the French giants were heavily touted to prevail.

But Die Borussen sprung a real surprise by defeating them 1-0, home and away. Niclas Fullkrug struck the only goal of the game in the 36th minute of the first leg whereas Matts Hummels headed one in after the break in the Paris leg, a week later.

Against all the odds, Dortmund were in the Champions League finals, their first appearance at this stage of the competition since 2013 and a third time overall although Real Madrid crushed their ambitions of a second title by inflicting a 2-0 loss at Wembley, the same venue that BVB had been defeated on their previous final appearance.

Dortmund now a pale shadow of their former selves

But two years on, Dortmund are now the pale shadow of their 2024 selves that stormed into the Champions League finals. In the 2025-26 season, the side even failed to reach the round of 16 after a catastrophic implosion in Bergamo that saw them relinquish a 2-0 first-leg lead and lose 4-1 in the second, thereby crashing out in humiliating fashion, while PSG went all the way to the finals again and retained their European crown.
